Department of Justice Enters Legal Challenge to Block California's New Electoral Map
Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
