The Fast-Food Giant Takes Down Artificial Intelligence Festive Advertisement Following Public Outcry.
The global fast-food chain has taken down a Christmas commercial produced with generative AI after encountering significant criticism on social media.
The short film was created using AI-generated video and was originally uploaded on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.
Audience Reaction and Removal
Soon after it aired, audiences online lambasted the implementation of AI in the commercial. Many described it as "disturbing" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This experience serves as an key learning as we investigate the appropriate utilization of Artificial Intelligence," commented a spokesperson from the company.
The advert was created for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It showed various scenarios that often go badly over the holidays, under the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".
The Movement of AI Commercials
Campaigns that incorporate AI-created content have become a growing trend among major corporations, especially for the Christmas season.
- Another beverage giant has also released consecutive AI-created Christmas ads.
- Inherent Limitations: As segments created using current AI video tools are prone to degrade the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be only a few seconds in length.
- Broader Implications: The video also sparked fears about job displacement in the production industry, with some critics stating it could negatively impact opportunities for camera crews.
Response from the Production Company
Following the video's removal, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.
Bridge claimed, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then shaped afterward "just as we would on any standard production".
"This wasn't an AI gimmick," she commented. "The result was a finished piece."
Divisive Public Reception
While the Dutch McDonald's ad was largely panned, the response for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been varied.
For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas spot from another major brand reportedly achieved a significant "positive sentiment rating" from online commenters.
However, various brands have also faced backlash for using the technique in their campaigns. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics called "lazy" and "disturbing".
The episode illustrates the evolving debate within the marketing and production industries about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
