Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
